Napoli eager to sign second Man Utd star after Alejandro Garnacho interest

Napoli are plotting a move for Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez in their latest Old Trafford raid.

The Serie A giants swooped to sign Scott McTominay last summer, signing the Scotland international for £25million.

McTominay went onto play an instrumental role in Napoli’s Serie A success, adored by supporters after a sublime first campaign in Italy.

Napoli could now return to Manchester with an offer for Martinez with Corriere dello Sport and Le Repubblica reporting their interest.

The Argentina international was an instant hit following his £50million arrival from Ajax in the summer of 2022.

But two significant injuries in the last two years have seen him miss a lot of football, featuring 15 times under Ruben Amorim before suffering a cruciate ligament injury in February.

There is no clear timeline for Martinez’s return to action with initial reports suggesting he could be sidelined from anywhere between six months to a year.

Injuries mean any offers for the centre-half are unlikely to materialise until 2026 but Napoli reportedly do not have concerns over his long-term fitness once he is back in action.

There is no indication whether United would be willing to sell Martinez, who has been a first-choice option at the back when available, quickly becoming a fixture under Amorim before his latest injury struck.

But every member of the current United squad is thought to have a price this summer – including Bruno Fernandes who United were ready to sell only for their skipper to turn down Al-Hilal.

Martinez is not the only United star on Napoli’s radar. The club were eager to sign Alejandro Garnacho in the January transfer window following Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s move to Paris Saint-Germain.

A £70million asking price ultimately proved to be too high, however.

Garnacho’s future at United is once again in real doubt after publicly questioning his manager’s decision not to start him in the Europa League final against Tottenham.

Napoli have once again been credited in the winger but his preference is to remain in the Premier League with Chelsea also keen.
