Indonesia's BNPB confirms 6,274 tonnes of Sumatra disaster relief

The government has facilitated the distribution of 6,274 tonnes of disaster relief logistics to residents affected by floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported.

Abdul Muhari, Head of BNPB's Center for Disaster Data, Information, and Communication, said in Jakarta on Tuesday that the figure reflects aid deliveries carried out between November 29 last year and January 27, 2026.

He noted that a wide range of essential goods, tools, and equipment weighing around 1,767 tonnes had been sent to the three provinces through multiple channels, including 56 sorties of BNPB-chartered planes, 68 sorties of military Hercules aircraft, 55 trucks, and seven vessels.

To complement deliveries sourced from beyond the affected regions, the BNPB has also set up two logistical posts, each located in West Sumatra and Aceh, to reach multiple cities and districts in the three provinces.

Elaborating further, Muhari highlighted that through the West Sumatra post, the BNPB and its partners have distributed more than 2,321 tonnes of aid, while the one in Aceh has enabled deliveries exceeding 2,186 tonnes.

Following adjustments to emergency handling and improvements in field conditions, the BNPB halted daily logistics deliveries to Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra as of Sunday (Feb. 1).

Nevertheless, he emphasized that the agency remains committed to ensuring disaster victims continue to receive adequate assistance in accordance with their needs and the evolving situation in each region.

According to BNPB data, a total of 105,842 residents across Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra remain in evacuation shelters. To support recovery, the agency is working on at least 9,145 temporary housing units for the displaced in collaboration with other institutions.
