Indonesia plans 14,000 km of new, reactivated railway tracks by 2045

The Indonesian government plans to expand the national railway network by adding approximately 14,000 kilometers of new and reactivated tracks by 2045, with total estimated investment of Rp1,100 trillion to Rp1,200 trillion (approximately US$61.45 billion to US$67.04 billion).

Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) said in Jakarta on Wednesday that accelerating railway development outside Java is a direct mandate from President Prabowo Subianto under the National Priority Work Program (PKPN).

"In principle, we aim to continue expanding the railway network," AHY said during a press conference.

AHY noted that Indonesia currently operates 7,000 kilometers of active railway tracks. However, significant track additions and reactivations are needed to support passenger mobility and logistics, particularly for the transportation of primary commodities in Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi.

According to the minister, Sumatra requires the strengthening and expansion of existing networks, Kalimantan requires rail infrastructure to be built from scratch, while Sulawesi needs greater integration between railways, industrial zones, and commodity centers.

In addition to infrastructure development, AHY highlighted the need to expand passenger train fleets while boosting domestic industrial independence through strategic international partnerships and technology transfers.
