Trump, Carney debate annexing Canada as 51st state in White House visit: live updates

Image
Fireworks lit up disputes about President Donald Trump’s priorities in a series of high-stakes meetings about foreign affairs and domestic spending . Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney told Trump in the Oval Office on May 6 that his country is “not for sale,” despite the president’s repeated proposals to annex the northern neighbor as a 51st state. The two met to discuss tariffs and border security, although Trump said he didn’t expect to change his import duties. Sparks flew on Capitol Hill, too, as the House Appropriations Committee began reviewing Trump’s budget blueprint for the year starting Oct. 1. Trump would like to eliminate the Federal Emergency Management Agency and simply provide disaster grants to the states, according to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Her confirmation of Democratic suspicions came after Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Connecticut, said “disasters happen everywhere” and argued the federal government needs to respond. DeLauro also critic...

Forget 10,000 steps a day: these are the five ways you can really lose weight from walking

Whether pounding the pavements on your way to work, or pacing around the park, reaching your daily 10,000 step count has been hailed as the holy grail of micro fitness metrics - and let’s face it, the satisfaction you get when your Whoop or Oura says you’ve hit your step goal is pretty addictive. Getting outside and breathing in fresh air can do wonders for physical and mental health, so it’s no wonder that walking is universally the most popular form of exercise in England. The science shows that regular walking helps to stave off premature death, and reduces the risk of several age-associated diseases, whilst also supporting cognitive and cardiovascular health. And one of the best things about walking? It’s accessible whatever your age and general fitness level. But trying to hit 10,000 steps may not be the best way to lose weight. Here are the best ways to get more than just a cardio boost on your walk. Rucking Rucking (aka walking with a weighted rucksack or vest) is a way of...

Boss of Biggest US Port Predicts When Tariffs Could Bite Consumers

Image
American importers currently have around "five to seven weeks of normal inventory" stockpiled according to Port of Los Angeles Director Gene Seroka . After that, he expects consumers to face "less choice and higher prices" due to President Trump's tariffs, Seroka told AFP news agency. Newsweek contacted the Port of Los Angeles and the Department of Commerce for comment on Saturday via email on Saturday outside of regular office hours. Why It Matters President Trump was elected in November on a platform that included cutting inflation, so any price rises could be difficult for him politically. In the longer term Trump argues the tariffs will boost manufacturing in the U.S. and slash the country's trade deficit with certain foreign powers, though critics argue it will lower economic growth and living standards, and boost inflation. What To Know "American importers, especially in the retail sector, are telling me that they have about five to seven weeks o...

Our Country, as we know it, is finished!' Trump rages at legal setback in overnight rant

Image
Buffeted by multiple court rulings overturning actions taken by his administration, Donald Trump took to Truth Social in the wee hours of Saturday morning to lash out at the legal system. On Thursday, Trump-nominated U.S. District Judge Fernandez Rodriguez permanently blocked the Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security from transferring or removing Venezuelans held under the Alien Enemies Act in the Southern District of Texas. Judge Rodriguez wrote, “The court concludes that as a matter of law, the executive branch cannot rely on the A.E.A., based on the proclamation, to detain the named petitioners and the certified class, or to remove them from the country." That, apparently, set off the president who fired off an attack on his social media platform. Early Saturday, Trump wrote, "Can it be so that Judges aren’t allowing the USA to Deport Criminals, including Murderers, out of our Country and back to where they came from? If this is so, our Country, as we...
